Moments Notice

As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

Mark 2:14

Levi, whose name was changed later to Matthew, was a “publican” collecting tolls for Herod Antipas at a toll-gate on the great west road from Damascus to the Mediterranean. Now, “publicans” were not very well liked by the other Jews, in fact, they would put them in the same class as sinners, thus, it is apparent that Levi was not an outwardly religious man by any means. I love the simplicity of the call and response in this verse. Many of you, throughout the course of any given day in the middle of doing business have had a similar call from the Holy Spirit to make a stand for Christ; to encourage a colleague; to go against the grain of popular opinion in order to maintain your integrity; to reject a thought that does not pass the purity test of a godly man; to make a tough decision because you know in your heart of hearts that it is the right and godly thing to do – how did you respond? Many times, God’s Spirit will engage our hearts, right in the middle of an ordinary day where we are performing ordinary business and God will be looking for a not so ordinary response as a result of our love for Him. What will your response be today? Will you put off your service for our King in order to carry on your business, or will you set aside the temporary for the eternal and choose to live your life for Jesus? Remember Levi’s example today and how he acted on a moments notice and made a decision that would change his life for the rest of eternity. Stay alert, look at the world around you today with the eyes of your heart in order that you would not miss the Holy Spirit’s prompting and God’s best for your life.
